Painted Desert
In the remote Arkaringa Hills in South Australia, the Painted Desert is a surreal multi-coloured landscape which has taken over 80 million years to create. The effects of erosion on the sediments from an ancient inland sea and the leaching of minerals into the rocks have created beautiful shapes and textures in orange, yellow, white and pink.
The Arkaringa Hills can be reached by traveling the gravel outback road between Oodnadatta and Coober Pedy and then taking a detour north on the narrow and winding dirt track towards Arkaringa Station. Driving across the never-ending scenery, the spectacular hills in the distance become more colourful as they get nearer.
